Transport Network Financial Review

A review of the project finances of a leading transport network organisation was undertaken following a request from the Financial Director.

·       >385k additional income identified

·       Appropriate project assessment criteria introduced, ensuring work completed delivers optimal benefit

·       Target of >75% utilisation demonstrated to be achievable

The organisation lacked an awareness of the financial impact of individual projects on their operating income, preventing the best choices being made when allocating resources.  We analysed the level of surplus realised by projects, and looked at variation between regions and project types.  Detailed case studies of high and low performing projects were completed to understand reasons behind variation.

Surplus or loss attributed to individual projects was linked to the financial performance of regions and departments, along with consideration of the amount of time allocated to non-income-generating budgets. A measure of utilization was developed included, highlighting the proportion of income-generating time.
